Osmyn Bourdillon was born on 24 January 1818, son of Brownlow Bourdillon of Wanstead, Bath. He was educated privately at Ramsgate, and at Boulogne, and was nominated as a Cadet in the Bombay Infantry in June 1839. He was posted as Ensign in the 25th Bombay Native Infantry in February 1840, was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1841, and subsequently saw action at the battle of Meeanee during the Scinde campaign in 1843. He was promoted to Captain in September 1853, and placed on the Invalid List in September 1857. Thereafter, he remained in India and served in a variety of administrative capacities, as Barrack Master at Belgaum in the early 1860s, and as Paymaster at Dalpoolie in 1863, after which he transferred to the Pay Department in 1865. For some years he was Pension Paymaster at Poona and, in 1874, he was recruited into the Pension Department at Bombay. He retired from the service on 1 November 1878, and died during the following year.
