George Merrett was born at Chippenham and served in the 66th Foot from June 1803 until January 1820, including 13 years in the East Indies. He was then transferred to the 3rd Royal Veterans Battalion, from which establishment he was discharged at Plymouth on 16 June 1821. His christian name is given as Johnathan on the short list of additional claimants for the Army of India medal sent to the War Office on 5 January 1856 (List No. 118, compiled by the Office for Military Boards, 14 June 1855).
