oak leaf, together with original certificate for King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct, in the name of ‘Ordinary Seaman Harry Borge’, dated 6 June 1941, good very fine and better (6) £150-200

Harry Borge was awarded his King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct for his deeds during an enemy air attack on Hayling Island on 17 April 1941 (Seedie’s and the London Gazette 6 June 1941 refer). On the night of the 17th Portsmouth was attacked by around 250 aircraft of Luftflotten 2 and 3, extensive damage being inflicted on a variety of targets - Hayling Island lies just to the east of the city.
