Alfred Norman Toovey was born at Foreal Hall, Northumberland on 9 October 1890 and was educated at Newcastle Modern School. By profession, an electrical engineer, he was commissioned into the 5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers in November 1911. He served with the battalion in the Great War and was wounded on 26 April 1915 at St. Julien and was in hospital for 4 months. In March 1916 he was invalided to England due to pains and swelling of his feet and bronchitis caused by a winter in the trenches. Sold with copied service papers and extracts from the war diary, April 1915. Croix de Guerre not confirmed.
