Sold with a quantity of original documents, including the recipient’s hand-written diary of his voyage aboard the cruiser, H.M.S. Aeolus, 1894-97, recording the ship’s service in the Mediterranean and then in the Far East. In the latter region he records some of the events, heard or witnessed, of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-95. Also from the same period are a large number of letters, again informative, written to his brother Will from the Far East. Amongst the letters are two painted postcards sent for Christmas to his mother and brother, dated Hong Kong 6 November 1894. Also with a number of hand-coloured souvenir photographs (folded and damaged) of Japan and a souvenir hand-coloured album (worn) bearing coins (2) and postage stamps from Japan. Fred Boon died of Cerebral and Spinal Meningitis on 7 December 1902 at Cromarty Hospital.
