William Lennon was born in Kilcash, Clonmel, Tipperary. A labourer by occupation, he attested at Cahir, Tipperary on 20 March 1837, aged 18 years, 11 months. He served with the regiment in both the First and Second Sikh Wars. He gained the rank of Serjeant with the regiment in February 1843 and again in August 1848, both times being tried and reduced to Private. He was transferred to the 4th Light Dragoons in March 1855, again becoming a Serjeant in December 1855 and again being tried and reduced to Private in December 1856. He was discharged at Dublin on 13 May 1861 as being medically unfit for further service due to rheumatism.
