Samuel Todd was born in Kingston, Hampshire on 17 September 1820.
He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Dido in 1838 and served aboard her in the actions on and off the coast of Syria during 1840. Service aboard H.M. Ships Illustrious, Excellent, Carysfort and Persian followed.
During the war against Russia he served as Chief Gunner’s Mate aboard H.M.S. Algiers in both the Baltic and Crimea theatres of war (clasps to latter not confirmed). He was promoted Gunner 3rd Class in January 1856 and attained the rank of Gunner 1st Class in September 1870. Todd was pensioned ashore on 22 November 1875.
