James Bull served as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Spencer at the Gut of Gibraltar in July 1801. He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion of the 57th Foot on 1 February 1803 and was discharged on 13 November 1813, in consequence of ‘loss of sight contracted in Spain in 1812 and in America in 1814’.
