William Shepherd Morrison was born on 10 August 1893 and educated at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh and Edinbugh University where he gained a M.A. He served as a Captain in the R.F.A. in the Great War, was wounded, awarded the Military Cross and three times mentioned in despatches. After the war he was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, 1923 and became a Q.C. in 1934. He contested the Western Isles seat in 1923 and 1924 and was Conservative M.P. for Cirencester and Tewkesbury, 1929-59. He was Member of the Medical Research Council and Industrial Health Board, 1931-36; was P.P.S. to the Attorney-General, 1931-35; Financial Secretary to the Treasury, 1935-36; Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, 1936-39; Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1939-40; Minister of Food, 1939-40; Postmaster-General, 1940-43 and Minister of Town and Country Planning, 1943-45. He was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons during 1951-59. He was created Viscount Dunrossil and awarded the G.C.M.G. in 1959 and in 1961 was appointed Governor-General of Australia. He died on 3 February 1961.
