British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse Rhodesia 1896, 1 clasp, Mashonaland 1897 (3411 Pte. P. McGuirk, 1/R. Dub. Fus.) very fine £350-400

Patrick McGuirk was born in Rockcorry, Co. Monaghan. A labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on 20 September 1889, aged 18 years, 7 months. Receiving training as a mounted infantryman in 1893, he was sent to South Africa in June 1896. There he served in the mounted infantry of the 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers in the Mashonaland Field Force. McGuirk was in hospital, 6 August -15 September 1896 having suffered a severe contusion to the shin after being kicked by a horse whilst on duty. He was discharged at his own request and payment on 16 February 1897. He later served in Mashonaland with the British South Africa Company’s Police.

Sold with copied service papers and extract from roll which confirms medal and clasp. One of two officers and 31 other ranks of the regiment entitled to the medal for Rhodesia 1896.
