Henry Crew was born in St. Pancras, London. A labourer by occupation, he attested for the 3rd Light Dragoons on 30 December 1845 and served with them in the Second Sikh War. The Muster Roll shows that he was several times absent wthout leave and that for July-September 1854 records him as a deserter. Tried for desertion in 1855, his sentence was later remitted by the General commanding the district. In May 1855 he volunteered for the 6th Dragoon Guards.
