Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (5430 W.O. Cl. II M. A. Deacon, Leic. R.) edge bruising and contact marks, good fine £60-80

Mark Alfred Deacon was born in the parish of St. Margaret’s, Leicester and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in December 1898, aged 18 years. He subsequently enjoyed rapid promotion, attaining the rank of Company Sergeant-Major in November 1915, but does not appear to have witnessed any active service, latterly being employed in the Labour Corps. He was finally discharged in May 1919.

Sold with a quantity of original documentation, including the recipient’s “Small Book”; Certificates of Education (2), 3rd Class, dated 19 February 1904, and 2nd Class, dated 10 April 1906; Qualification for Promotion certificate in the rank of Sergeant, dated 2 June 1911; certificates from the Army School of Cookery, Aldershot, dated September 1912 and January 1913, the latter confirming him ‘fit for duties as a Sergeant Cook’; letters of reference from regimental officers, etc. (5), 1912-1919; Character and Discharge certificates, dated 17 May 1919; War Badge certificate, dated 6 June 1919; and four photographic postcards, including military subject matter with the recipient.
