Francis Greenwood Johnson was born in Leeds, Yorkshire and enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry in January 1901, aged 22 years. He subsequently served in South Africa from February of the latter year until August 1902 and was discharged in the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant soon after his return to the U.K.
