Thomas Archer was born in Coventry, Warwickshire and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in February 1894, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 12 years with the Colours, his only service overseas was out in South Africa 1896-1902, including his part in the battle of Talana and the defence of Ladysmith, and afterwards at the engagement at Laing’s Nek. He was discharged in February 1906.
