George Ernest Church was born in Leicester and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment direct from the Militia in November 1893, aged 20 years. In his subsequent career of nine years with the Colours, his only service overseas was in South Africa between January 1896 and October 1902, where he was present at the battle of Talana and at the defence of Ladysmith, and was wounded at Farquhar’s Farm on 30 October 1899. Transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1903, he was discharged as medically unfit in March of the following year.
