Henry Loose was born at Lifton, Devonshire and enlisted in the 17th Regiment in February 1859, aged 19 years, direct from the Royal Cornwall Rangers. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours, his overseas postings included upwards of seven years in North America, including service during the Fenian troubles of 1866. He was finally discharged at Netley in December 1879.
