Henry Corney was born at Marwood, Devon and enlisted in the 17th Regiment at Exeter in October 1853, aged 17 years. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours his overseas postings included active service in the Crimea (his discharge papers do not refer to the Sebastopol clasp), nearly nine years of duty in North America and another three in the East Indies, a period that witnessed his advancement to Corporal in December 1854, to Sergeant in June 1858 and to Colour-Sergeant in June of the following year. Corney, who was discharged in January 1875, was subsequently awarded the M.S.M. in April 1904.
