Arthur Cottrall was born at Cothwall, Herefordshire and enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment in August 1891, aged 21 years. He subsequently served in the West Indies 1893-95 and was placed on the Army Reserve in June 1899. Recalled later in the year for service in South Africa, he served with the 1st Battalion in that theatre of war from November 1899 until February 1901, and was placed back on the Army Reserve in April 1902.
