Allfrey joined the 1st Battalion, 17th Regiment out in Afghanistan in February 1879 and was present with it at the operations at Maidanak. Sadly, however, he died from ‘the effects of illness contracted in the field’ at Safed Sang on 13 May 1879 (Shadbolt refers).
