Thomas Harris was born in Leicestershire and enlisted in the 17th Regiment in April 1879, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of ten years with the Colours, he served out in India from 1880-89, and was present in the ‘Southern China Field Force from 28 December 1888 to 12 June 1889’. Placed on the Army Reserve at the end of the latter year, Harris was finally discharged in April 1891.
