Ghuznee 1839 (Jon. Clarke, 17th Regt.), engraved naming, fitted with integral loop and swivel-bar suspension, the latter engraved ‘Cabul 1839’, together with upper brooch-bar for wearing engraved ‘Afghanistan 1839’ and a slide-on riband buckle further engraved ‘Kandahar 1839 / Khelat 1839’, contact marks and edge bruising, severely polished, fair to fine £200-250

John Clarke was born in Bury and enlisted in the 17th Regiment in September 1826, aged 18 years. In his subsequent career of 22 years with the Colours, his overseas postings included five years in New South Wales and eleven years out in the East Indies, when he was present at the storming and capture of Ghuznee in July 1839. He was discharged ‘unfit for further service’ in June 1848.
