William Lindsell was born in the Parish of Ingatstone, Brentwood, Essex. A labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal artillery on 16 January 1891. He served in South Africa, 29 January 1900 - 22 October 1902 and was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1910. With the 27th Brigade R.F.A. he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 19 August 1914. At the war’s end he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his services.
