Germany, First World War, Death of Manfred von Richthofen, 1918, silver medal, bust almost facing, reverse eagle’s head, laurel spray on propeller, 21 apr. 1918 in field, matt finish, 33mm. Extremely fine but a little discoloured (£30-40)

Richthofen, Manfred, Freiherr von (1892-1918), leader of of a remarkable group of German aviators who became known of Richhofen’s circus. Richthofen earned the sobriquet of the Red Baron or the Red Knight of Germany on account of his plane which was painted red. He was shot down in 1918 after bringing down 80 enemy planes.
