Haig, Douglas, Ist Earl Haig (1861-1928), appointed commander in chief of the BEF in 1915. His management of campaigns such as the Somme and Passchendaele were criticised by Lloyd George but he retained his command until the end of the War. Haig was created Earl Haig in 1919 and in 1921 Baron Haig of Bemersyde.
