Charles II (1660-1685), Marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, 1662, an oval silver badge, comprising two repoussé plates, unsigned, crowned bust of Charles left dividing crowned CR, reverse bust of Catherine left, her hair in a net, crown in field, 36 x 28mm, 3.91gm (MI 483/96; E 225). Fine, toned; with loop for suspension (£25-35)

Helen Farquhar, writing at the turn of the century (BNJ 1905, p.278), says of this piece “I think [it is] perhaps the ugliest of all [the badges distributed in celebration of Charles II’s marriage], as the Queen appears in the hideous Portuguese fashions, which she discarded soon after her arrival in England.”
