This date is recognised not only as the rarest in the series of George III sovereigns but as one of the rarest dates in the entire sovereign series. A mere six examples are believed available to commerce and this is one of only three to have been offered in recent times (
cf. M.A. Marsh, The Gold Sovereign, 2002, p.5). This is almost certainly the coin which Marsh once considered buying but was put off by its condition, a decision he was to regret for many years
