France, Louis XIII, 1626, a cast copper medal by G. Dupré, bust right in armour and triple-layered ruff, rev. seated figure of Justice, the constellation Libra above, 63mm (BMC 58; Maz. II, 689; Kress 566; Humphris 115; Clifford 444). Good very fine with pleasing dark patination (£250-300)

Illustrated on the Plates. The medal alludes to Louis adopting the title ‘La Juste’. Whilst dated 1626 on the truncation of the bust, the medal is also found dated 1623 in the exergual area of the reverse. Louis XIII was born under the sign of Libra
