Medical Society of London (Instituted 1773), a silver award medal by W. Wilson, Hygeia feeding a serpent entwined around a smoking altar, rev. wreath, named (John Hilton Esqr, F.R.S., President, 1859), 45mm (Storer 6546). Good very fine, rare; in maroon fitted case of issue (£60-80)

John Hilton (1804-78), surgeon, born at Castle Hedingham, Essex, entered Guy’s Hospital as a student in 1824 and subsequently enjoyed a lengthy career there, being appointed full surgeon in 1849. He was much published and was professor of human anatomy at the College of Surgeons, 1860-2. Sold with further biographical detail
