Samuel Ellison was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd West Riding Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force), and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front. Advanced Captain, for his services during the Great War he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 7 July 1919).
