George Petrie served during the Great War with the 1/6th (Banff and Donside) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 2 December 1915. Private Petrie was killed in action on the Western Front, 20 November 1917. On the latter date the Battalion were serving as part of the 51st (Highland) Division during the Battle of Cambrai. He is buried in Orival Wood, Flesquieres, France.
