British War Medal 1914-20 (Lieut. W. A. Kempe) nearly extremely fine £50-£70

William Alfred Kempe was born in Enfield, Middlesex on 21 August 1882, and was educated at Haileybury College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He joined the East African Protectorate as Temporary Assistant Auditor on 2 October 1905 and later saw Great War Service as a Lieutenant in the Nairobi Defence Force. Appointed Treasurer of the East African Protectorate in November 1919, photographs and extracts of his diary available online at www.europeansineastafrica.co.uk include an entry dated 14 August 1920: ‘Got my first currency note with my signature from the Currency Board.’

Kempe died of Typhoid Fever in Nairobi on 23 January 1922 and is buried in Nairobi South Cemetery. The British War Medal is his sole medallic entitlement.
