Walter Stirling, who was born in Vienna in 1838, was the son of Sir Walter Stirling of Faskine, 2nd Baronet. After service in the Royal Navy, for which he was awarded the Order of the Medjidie, he was appointed to a commission in the Coldstream Guards in 1855. He died in 1862.
