Cecil Charles Fowler was born in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1872 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Winchester on 23 January 1900, having previously served in the Hampshire Carabineers. Promoted Corporal on 1 March 1900, he served with the 50th (Hampshire) Company, 17th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 7 April 1900 to 9 June 1901, was advanced Squadron Sergeant Major on 11 May 1901, and was Mentioned in Lord Roberts’ Despatch (London Gazette 10 September 1901). He was discharged on 15 June 1901, after 1 year and 144 days’ service.
