John Low was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Wessex Howitzer Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) (B Battery, 5th Hampshire - Isle of Wight) and served with them during the Great War in the Balkan theatre of war from March 1915. He was promoted Lieutenant on 1 June 1916.
