James Lawler enlisted for the 25th Brigade at Liverpool, Lancashire, on 24 July 1874, aged 20 years. He served in South Africa with the 1st Battalion, 24th Foot, and was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 21 January 1879. His effects were claimed by his brother and sister.
