James McLean, a native of Aidree, Lanarkshire, attested for the Royal Artillery on 23 November 1887. Transferring to the Reserve on 23 November 1894, he was recalled for service during the Boer War, serving in South Africa from 17 February 1900 to 29 August 1902, and was taken Prisoner of War at Nitral’s Nek on 11 July 1900. He was discharged on 22 November 1903.
