James Clarkson served in the Hospital Ship Roslin Castle during the Boer War, and subsequently with the Army Service Corps during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 December 1914 to 16 May 1916. He was discharged on 18 August 1916, being no longer physically fit for war service, suffering from debility and varicose veins.
