Donald McLeod Pedden volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy in November 1946 and commenced his career as an Ordinary Seaman in January of the following year. By the outbreak of hostilities in Korea, he had attained the rank of Able Seaman, and he served in that theatre of war aboard H.M.C.S. Cayuga from July 1950 to April 1951. Pedden was released from the R.C.N. in January 1952; see Canadian Naval Operations in Korean Waters 1950-55 for more details regarding the Cayuga, whose crew eventually won a D.S.O., an O.B.E., two D.S.Cs, a B.E.M. and four “mentions”.
