Sydney Gordon Twitchin was killed in action on 10 September 1940, while serving in a Beaufort of No. 22 Squadron on a sortie to Boulogne.

Twitchin had commenced his operational career back in May 1940, and had completed a number of sorties prior to his death. On returning from one of them, his aircraft developed engine failure and crashed at Ashington, Northumberland - two crew members died, but Twitchin and his pilot landed safely by parachute.

Sold with two original R.A.F. Record Office letters regarding the recipient’s death in action, dated in March and April 1941, together with four wartime photographs.
