Frederick William Mayston was serving in the corvette H.M.S. Picotee on 12 August 1941, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the U-568 off Iceland. Her captain, Lieutenant R. A. Harrison, R.N.R., and 63 other crew members, including Mayston, were lost. Aged 41 years, he left a widow resident at Bury St. Edmunds, Norfolk.
