Three: Mechanician A. A. H. Farnes, Royal Navy

Alfred Albert Henry Farnes was born on 11 February 1875 in Hackney, London. A laundryman by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in 1895. Promoted Stoker in 1897, Acting Leading Stoker in 1904, Stoker Petty Officer in 1906, he attained the rank of Mechanician whilst serving aboard the battleship Africa in 1908. During the early part of the War, he served aboard the scout cruiser Sentinel (July 1914-September 1915) which acted as the flotilla leader for the 6th Destroyer Flotilla based at Dover (1914) and then the 8th Destroyer Flotilla based on the Forth (1914-15). After leaving the Sentinel, Farnes spent the remainder of the war ashore. Sold with copied service paper.
