Hugh D’Oyly Lyle was born on 4 July 1895, the son of Colonel H. J. Lyle of Oteley House, Wrexham. Educated at Uppingham School (1910-12), he was commissioned into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 1 October 1914. He served in France and Flanders from 19 December 1914 to 16 January 1915 and again from 28 April to 10 October 1915, serving in the Balkans from 2 November 1916 to 30 March 1917. Promoted Lieutenant on 24 January 1915, he held the temporary rank of Captain from October 1918 to July 1919 and was promoted Captain on 1 January 1923. After the war, service in Waziristan during 1919-21 followed, for which he was awarded the I.G.S. medal with clasp and was mentioned in despatches. Employed by the West African Field Force during 1925-27, he was placed on Retired Pay with the Army Reserve of Officers on 10 May 1933. He retired to become the Secretary of the Golf Club at Coleraine, Northern Ireland. Awarded the Brevet of Major on 24 October 1939, he was recalled for regular army service with the 2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers, but was passed unfit. He died on 18 December 1977.
