Herbert Goddard, who was born in 1888, enlisted in the South Lancashire Regiment at Blackdown in March 1908, and, as evidenced by accompanying photographs, onetime served in the regimental band. Entitled to a single British War Medal 1914-20 for services out in India (MIC entry refers), he was demobilised back in Shrewsbury in March 1920.

Sold with four studio-quality photographs, two of them of the South Lancashire Regiment’s band, including Goddard; picture postcards of scenes in India (9), several inscribed by the recipient; his “official copy” soldier’s prayer book, with pencilled inscription on inside back cover, ‘H. Goddard, 8856’; Third Class Certificate of Education; ‘Authority for Journey from India to the United Kingdom’, dated 29 September 1919; and his Character and Discharge Certificates; together with a regimental football prize award, in the form of a watch fob, complete with chain, the obverse named ‘Pte. Goddard’ and dated 1915, and five regimental and / or bandsman’s badges, these last contained in a Queen Mary Christmas 1914 tin.
