Three: Private Thomas Mansell, Welsh Guards

Thomas Mansell was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. A miner by occupation, he enlisted into the Grenadier Gurads at Merthyr, Glamorganshire on 7 December 1914, aged 28 years. He was transferred to the Welsh Guards on 24 February 1915 and embarked at Southampton for service in France on 17 August 1915. With the regiment, he was wounded in action on 1 July 1916, receiving shrapnel wounds to the upper left leg and left shoulder and was invalided to England two days later. Whilst in England he was convicted of deserting the service from 18-28 January 1917. Returning to France on 14 March 1917, he rejoined the regiment on 2 April. On 30/31 July 1917 he was seriously wounded, receiving gunshot wounds to both legs resulting in complex fractures. Taken to No.61 Casualty Clearing Station, he died on 31 July. He was buried in Dozingheim Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium. Sold with copied research.
