1914 Star, with clasp (1986 Cpl., 1/1 Herts. R.); British War and Victory Medals (1986 Cpl., Herts. R.) second with edge bruise, very fine and better (3) £120-160

In the Watford Illustrated No.16 of 28 November 1914, it stated, ‘Corporal Kettle, the son of Mr W. B. Kettle, florist, St. Albans Road, Watford, who was with the 1st Battalion Herts Regiment (Territorials) was wounded at Ypres. He was on duty carrying dispatches from the Colonel of the Regiment (Viscount Hampden) to his Captain, and whilst waiting inside a Farm House for orders, a shell burst through the wall, a fragment struck him in the face and lodged under the eye. This has been extracted, and the wound is healing up well. He is now in a London Hospital, and hopes soon to be back again.’ A picture of the Corporal appeared in the Watford Illustrated No. 22 of January 1915. Sold with copied photographs of the above.
