Samuel George Lambert was born in Leiston, Suffolk on 1 July 1879. A clerk by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1895. Swiftly promoted through the ranks to Petty Officer 1st Class in 1901, he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1911. The outbreak of war in 1914 saw him aboard the pre-dreadnaught battleship Lord Nelson, August 1913-November 1914. Later seagoing appointments included service aboard the cruisers Centaur, August 1916-January 1918 and Curacoa, January 1918-July 1919, both ships serving in the Harwich Force. For his services in the Great War he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 11 August 1917) and was awarded the French Medaille Militaire (London Gazette 25 January 1918). Sold with copied service papers and confirmation of Q.S.A. clasps.
