Henry Garner Rainey was born at Meerut, India, on 6 November 1813, and entered the Army as an Ensign in the 49th Regiment on 12 April 1831, becoming Lieutenant in June 1833 and Captain in December 1842. He served with the 49th Regiment throughout the operations in China, commencing with the first taking of Chusan, and terminating with the demonstration before Nankin, including the storm and capture of the heights above Canton, attack and capture of Amoy, second capture of Chusan, attack and capture of the heights of Chinhae, occupation of Ningpo, repulse of the night attack on Ningpo, attack and capture of the enemy’s entrenched camp on the heights of Segoan, attack and capture of Chapoo, Woosung and Chin Kiang Foo.

Promoted to Major in November 1851, Rainey exchanged into the 61st Foot on 13 September 1853, becoming Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1856. He served with the 61st Foot during the Indian Mutiny, including the siege, assault and capture of Delhi, and commanded the Wing engaged at the action of Nujjufghur. For his services during the Mutiny Rainey was made a Companion of the Bath.
