The Umsinga Militia Reserves were used as a local reserve unit during hostilities. On 12 May they were merged with the Newcastle, Ladysmith, Dundee and Estcourt Reserves, under the overall command of Captain Rattray for actions near Elands Kraal. The Umsinga Militia Reserves were used mainly as guides and scouts, utilising their local knowledge.
