Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (A. Begg, Sto., H.M.S. Philomel) nearly extremely fine £160-200

Leading Stoker Alexander Begg was killed in action on 22 September 1914 whilst serving aboard the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Hogue. The Hogue, in company with her sister ships, the Cressy and Aboukir, was sunk in the North Sea, 30 miles off Ymuiden, by the German submarine U9 commanded by Lieutenant Otto Weddigen. The total loss of life in the triple disaster was over 1,400 officers and men.
