Kenneth McDonald was born on 14 August 1873 and entered the Royal Marines as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1891. Promoted Lieutenant in 1892, he transferred to the Army Service Corps in 1894. With the Army Service Corps he served in the Sudan campaign of 1898 and was awarded the Queen’s and Khedive’s medal. He then served in Sierra Leone expedition of 1898-99 and was promoted Captain in the latter year. Captain MacDonald then served in the Boer War where he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10 September 1901) and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette 27 September 1901).
